As I have been walking through election day here in America, processing it, I have been reflection on who God is and what He is about. I have been wondering just how it is we as disciples, who live in America, actually should feel about election day. How do we live in light of the freedom this nation has given us?
How tied to the political process are we? Where is our hope? Where is our faith? Where is Jesus in our views of the electoral process?
Jeremiah 29:4-9 – “Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, to all the exiles whom I have sent into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat their produce. Take wives and have sons and daughters; take wives for your sons, and give your daughters in marriage, that they may bear sons and daughters; multiply there, and do not decrease. But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the LORD on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare. For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Do not let your prophets and your diviners who are among you deceive you, and do not listen to the dreams that they dream, for it is a lie that they are prophesying to you in my name; I did not send them, declares the LORD.”
Mark 12:17 – “Jesus said to them, ‘Render to Casear the things that are Caesar’s and to God the things that are God’s.’ And they marveled at him.”
1 Timothy 2:1-5 – “First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and there is one mediator, between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time.”
Romans 13:1-7 – “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. For rulers are nto a terror to good conduct, but to bad… Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue s owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.”
Revelation 21:1-5a – “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.’ And he who was seated on the throne said, ‘Behold, I am making all things new.’ Also he said, ‘Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true
I have never, ever been a fan of the notion of “Jesus for President”. I personally think that idea is ludicris and goes against the very fabric of the kingdom Jesus of Nazareth established while on earth. If Jesus wanted to be a part of an earthly political regime, He could have take Satan up on his offer in the wilderness during his time of temptation. If Jesus wanted to establish and earthly kingdom, then when Peter cut off a soldiers ear, Jesus could have looked at His disciples and said “Yes, finally, you get it. My kingdom is going to come and we shall conquer Rome.”
The kingdom Jesus initiated is not this kingdom.
Jesus would not run for President.
We are meant to love on our cities and our country as an embodiment of the kingdom Jesus established. It is not about who is President or who isn’t? It is nto about what legislation our country passes or not. Now, we have the right in America, so by all means vote and be subject to our governing authorities. But remember, we are meant to be an example of the kingdom not a fan of Romney or Obama – Republican or Democrat.
On election day, may we remember we get to cast a vote to love our city well – but in the end we still have to be the kingdom. On election day, may we remember as we cast our vote that Jesus is God. This vote will never fail; He always wins.
